Beautifully written, Brooke. I wholeheartedly agree you need to take ownership over your goals. I've struggled with actually calling myself a writer.

Lately, however, I feel more confident talking about it with my peers, which in turn has led to increased motivation and determination.

You're right, taking ownership is a form of action.
