Before you can act on your desires, you first need to know what they are.

I’ve long thought that life was a compass, not a watch. We navigate the day to day, working our way toward a particular goal, but on a time limit. You are on your schedule, just as I am on mine.

Still, that doesn’t mean you don’t need help finding a bit of direction in life. We all get lost from time to time. I spent months with zero guidance, applying for jobs I didn’t really want and wallowed in my own self-pity. Fun times.

Perhaps the first step to finding direction is to know why you are lost. Let’s explore a few potential reasons.

You Listen to What People Say You Should Want

First, there’s a real-world example I think explains this best. Despite being one of the most successful DJs in the world, Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, committed suicide in 2018 at the age of 28.

His father described him as an introvert, forced to do a lot of things he didn’t want to as a result of being one of the world’s best DJs. His family said making music was what he loved to do, but he had dissatisfaction with life, love and his purpose, resulting in many “frank”…
